Amboy, California: A Glimpse of the Past on Route 66

Amboy, California is a small town located in the Mojave Desert. It is best known for its historic Roy’s Motel and Cafe, which is a popular stop for Route 66 travelers.

Amboy was founded in 1885 by William A. Workman, a pioneer who came to the area in search of gold. The town quickly grew into a thriving community, thanks to its location on the Santa Fe Railroad line. In 1926, Route 66 was established, and Amboy became a popular stop for travelers.

Roy’s Motel and Cafe was built in 1938 by Roy Crowl. The motel and cafe quickly became a popular destination for Route 66 travelers. The motel offered a place to stay, and the cafe served up delicious food and drinks.

Amboy’s fortunes declined after the construction of Interstate 40 in 1956. The new highway bypassed Amboy, and many businesses in the town closed down. However, Roy’s Motel and Cafe remained open, and it continues to be a popular stop for Route 66 travelers today.

Today, Amboy is a ghost town, but it is still a popular destination for Route 66 travelers. Roy’s Motel and Cafe is a reminder of the town’s past glory, and it is a great place to stop for a bite to eat or a souvenir.

Renovation of Roy’s Cafe

In 2005, Albert Okura, the founder of the Juan Pollo restaurant chain, purchased the town of Amboy, California for $435,000. As of my knowledge cutoff in 2021, Okura had plans to renovate Roy’s Cafe, a historic landmark in the town. He had already repaired the roof, repainted the exterior, and renovated the kitchen. Additionally, he had plans to renovate the gas station and motel in the town, with the goal of restoring it to its former glory as a Route 66 attraction.
